Apple adds new 256 GB and 512 GB flash storage options across iMac range

Apple has introduced new storage options for its iMac range to allow users to specify a new solid state flash drive instead of the traditional hard drive.

The new built-to-order options allows buyers to choose between:

  • a 256GB solid state flash drive for an extra $300 or
  • a 512GB solid state flash drive for $600 more
  • a 768GB solid state flash drive for $900 more (available for the 276 inch iMac only)

Up until now there was only the choice between hard drives or the hybrid solid state/hard drive Fusion Drive option. (The 1TB Fusion Drive is still an option for buyers at $250 extra.)

MacObserver said: “For 27-inch iMac shoppers, the new options simply add more capacities to choose from since they could opt for a 768 GB SSD instead of a hard drive or Fusion Drive. For 21-inch iMac buyers, this opens up brand new choices since they previously couldn’t build-to-order with an SSD.”

The new drives are available as upgrade options when orders are placed through the Apple online store.

In the UK the new solid state devices are available for:

  • 256GB – £240
  • 512GB – £480
  • 768GB – £720 (27 inch iMac only)
