Could the next tech battle field center around the watch market?

Apple is rumored to be launching an iWatch soon and we have already seen many concept images of what the new device could look like.

Now Samsung – Apple’s arch rival – has let slip that it too is working on a watch which will link to the owner’s mobile phone and offer email and app downloads.

Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, is reported to have told Bloomberg during an interview in Seoul: “‘We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it.

“We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.

“The issue here is who will first commercialize it so consumers can use it meaningfully.”

It used to be that most people wore a watch in order to tell the time, as a fashion accessory or both but these days many people use their smartphones as a watch instead.

Now, it seems, we are about to come full circle with a watch integrated into our smartphones.

Marshal Cohen, an analyst at NPD Group in Port Washington, New York, said: “The race is on to redesign the mobile phone into something that you wear.

“We’re going to see formidable competition coming from many different directions — from device makers, accessory makers, even fashion designers.”
