BlackBerry CEO takes bite out of Apple’s “long in the tooth” operating system

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has hit out at Apple’s iOS and said it was time for the company to start innovating again.

Speaking to the Australian Financial Review, he accused the company of becoming too complacent having done “a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market.”

He was particularly critical of the iPhone’s user interface saying: “The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about, is now five years old.

“History repeats itself again I guess … the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly.”

Heins’ comments come less than two months after his company launched the BlackBerry 10 OS and the Z10 handset which runs on it. The Q10 will also use BlackBerry 10 when it launches later this year.

I think that there is certainly more than a grain of truth in what he says and Apple could well do with raising their game to capture a new generation of smartphone users.

Heins also said that BlackBerry 10 actually beats iOS with its ability to run and use multiple apps at the same time.
