Just hours before Samsung’s big launch event in New York, Apple’s marketing chief Phil Schiller has gone on the offensive.

He branded Google’s Android software as ’fragmented’ as the Korean firm prepares to launch its new flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S4 – in New York tonight.

Schiller told the Wall Street Journal: “When you take an Android device out of the box, you have to sign up to nine accounts with different vendors to get the experience iOS comes with. They don’t work seamlessly together.”

Schiller also told Reuters that Google’s own research showed the vast majority of Android users were stuck on older versions of the software.

He said: “With their own data, only 16 percent of Android users are on year-old version of the operating system. Over 50 percent are still on software that is two-years-old.

“[T]he news we are hearing this week that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is being rumored to ship with an OS that is nearly a year old. Customers will have to wait to get an update.”

He also said that Apple’s internal research shows four times as many consumers are switching to iOS from Android than the other way.

“At Apple we know that it’s not just enough to have products pumped out in large numbers,” he said.
